Brunswick County History

Oak Island Lighthouse Station
This southeastern county of North
Carolina has a long history. From the mid-1700's, Fort Johnston has protected
Southport's mariners and traders. From 1836, Fort Caswell protected Oak
Island and the Cape Fear Inlet.

Fort Caswell Battery Shipp
The Inlet is dotted with lighthouses that protected the mariners from the rocky shoals. The Oak Island Lighthouse is currently the brightest beacon in the United States shining out over 24 nautical miles into the Atlantic Ocean.

Fort Caswell Battery McKavett-McDonough
Because of the long-standing historical landmarks in the area, development has come slow. So if you're looking for a place to kick up your feet and relax, this is the place to be. Don't worry though, Wilmington is only 30 miles to the north and Myrtle Beach is only 70 miles to the south if you care for a little extra kick in your day.
